ENGINES – Keen to highlight the car’s agile nature, engine choice was initially of the petrol V8 variety. As a result swift progress is, obviously, guaranteed. The 2.7 V6 diesel is less costly to run, while the recent 3.6 V8 diesel offers a good mix of performance and economy.
EXTERIOR – A chunky car from all views, the Range Rover Sport was designed to look modern and attract a more youthful buyer. It’s still obviously a Range Rover, and the car’s split rear tailgate and lofty stance help promote its practical side.
INTERIOR – The chunky theme continues inside, with the front cabin blending no-nonsense practicality with executive class. There’s plenty of room for a grown-up family, while the boot is huge by regular car standards.
DRIVING – Cleverly blending agile road manners with the ability to climb almost every mountain, the Sport is a real world, dual-purpose luxury SUV. The off-roading is managed in part through a clever suite of electronics, while on road performance ensures a near roll-free experience. All the engines are impressive, with the V8 diesel a real eye-opener.
OWNERSHIP – Whatever the purchase price, a Range Rover Sport isn’t a cheap car to run. Insurance, road tax and fuel will likely be the biggest considerations. On a practical note, despite the car’s size it’s easy to drive. Capable off road and when towing, there’s little it can’t do.
WHAT TO LOOK FOR – Always look for underbody damage – enthusiastic off-road could have resulted in potentially expensive damage. Cosmetic issues (parking dents, kerbed wheels, cracked lights) shouldn’t be present on such a new, premium level car. A comprehensive service history is a must for such a complex vehicle, while a check for outstanding finance is recommended.
